The Refuge Ranch
The Refuge Ranch provides long-term, holistic care in a pastoral and peaceful setting to girls 11-17 who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. Each girl in our care will have her own plan of restoration, which we call her Circle of Care, unique to her age, situation, and needs. On site schooling, a medical clinic, therapeutic programs that include equine, art, music and pet therapy, along with one on one counseling and group therapy with licensed professional therapists are all part of our long-term, residential care. The girls are housed in specially designed cottages providing safety and security, but a sense of family and community as well. The Refuge Ranch is located on 50 acres, in a pastoral and peaceful setting just outside the city of Austin.
THE REFUGE RANCH
As the severity and scope of domestic minor sex trafficking in the United States gains wider attention, more children are identified and recovered from exploitative situations than ever before, but few have access to the broad range of therapeutic services needed to begin their healing journey.
Our response is to provide a place that offers the very best care available to child survivors.
Developed by The Refuge for DMST™ (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Refuge Ranch is a long-term, residential, therapeutic community for girls, ages 14 through 19, who have been recovered from sex traffickers. Built from the ground up on 50 acres in a beautiful and restorative setting outside of Austin, TX, The Refuge Ranch provides trauma-informed, holistic care for the girls on-site, including:
Psychiatric services from Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Psychiatry and the Institute for Early Life Adversity Research
Education through the Trinity Charter School
Medical services by community partners
And various therapeutic programs uniquely designed for the development of a child survivor
why The Refuge Ranch is needed
There are nearly 79,000 minors and youth victims of sex trafficking in Texas today, according to a groundbreaking study by the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA) at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.
The harsh reality is that young girls are being sex trafficked across all socio-economic, racial, educational and family backgrounds.
Child sex trafficking is a hidden crime perpetrated on children who often don’t self-identify as victims for many complex reasons. It is difficult to quantify the size of this problem and much more work is needed to identify and help all the victims.
As of today, these statistics provide the best, most reliable snapshot of this hidden crime:
Child sex trafficking is the fastest-growing crime in the world. — United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
83% of victims in confirmed sex-trafficking incidents were identified as U.S. citizens. — US Justice Department
The average age a girl is lured or forced into sex trafficking is just 15 years old. — National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
Texas has the second most reported number of child sex trafficking cases in the U.S. – Polaris Project
Prior to the opening of The Refuge Ranch, Texas only had 24 beds available for child survivors’ long-term recovery from trauma.
